health & wellness
We know its tough on everyone when your little one is ill, particularly them. In order
to provide your child with the best possible care, we have developed the following
Health & Wellness Policy for our school. Our hope is that continued support from
both you and your childs health care provider will help us in maintaining a healthy
environment for everyone.
Please inform us when there is anything unusual in either your childs behavior
and/or health. This is always a good plan that helps us guide their day. If we
determine that your child is ill, s/he cannot remain in our care.
We are not equipped to have sick children in our care. If your child is ill s/he needs
to stay home. If your child becomes ill while at school, they will need to be picked up
within the hour. For this reason, it is a good idea to have a back-up plan for childcare.
Once your child has been well for 24 hours, and both you and the Apple Seed staff
have determined that they are well, they may come back to school. Please, please,
please: Do NOT "dose" your child with medication in order to send them to school.
It wears off and we will end up needing to phone you to come and get them. This is
not good for any of us.
Be sure to inform us if your child has any contagious illnesses such as (but not
limited to) chicken pox or pink eye. We need to inform the other parents in care by
putting up an exposure notice.
Children need to stay home or may be sent home for any of the following reasons:
1. Any illness or injury that prevents your child from participating comfortably in our
regular activities.
2. The illness results in a greater care need than the child care staff can provide
without compromising the health and safety of the other children; or
3. The child has any of the following conditions:
Fever with behavior change &/or other signs & symptoms of illness. Oral
temperature of 100° or greater; rectal temperature of 101° or greater; auxiliary
(armpit) temperature of 99° or greater. We only take temperatures using the
auxiliary (armpit) method while the children are in our care.
Symptoms and signs of severe illness such as unusual lethargy, uncontrolled
coughing, irritability, persistent crying, difficult breathing, wheezing or other unusual
signs until medical evaluation indicates inclusion.
Uncontrolled diarrhea within the last 24 hours.
Vomiting more than once in the last 24 hours until the vomiting stops and the child
is not in danger of dehydration.
Mouth sores with drooling unless a health care provider determines the condition is
noninfectious.
Rash with fever or behavior change, until a health care provider determines that
these symptoms do not indicate a communicable disease.
Pink Eye with white or yellow discharge until 24 hours after treatment has been
initiated.
Scabies, head lice, or other infestation, until 24 hours after treatment has been
initiated. For head lice: every single nit must be removed before the child may
return to care.
Impetigo, until 24 hours after treatment has been initiated.
Strep throat or other streptococcal infection, until 24 hours after antibiotic
treatment is begun.
Chicken pox, until six days after the onset of rash and until all of the scabs have
dried and crusted.
Pertussis (Whooping Cough), until 5 days of appropriate antibiotic treatment.
Unspecified respiratory illness, severely ill children with the common cold, croup,
bronchitis, pneumonia, otitis media (ear infection).
